Biblical Foundations of Group Discernment-Paul Anderson
Paul serves as Professor of Biblical Studies and chair of the Department of Religious Studies at George Fox University, where he has taught since 1989. Author of over 150 published essays and several books, Anderson is known among biblical scholars for his books, The Christology of the Fourth Gospel and The Fourth Gospel and the Quest for Jesus. Paul Anderson also serves as Director of the Congregational Discernment Project at George Fox University (http://www.georgefox.edu/discernment), a Lilly funded grant, and he has worked inter-denominationally to help Christian leaders from different traditions and structures understand how to help individuals and groups attend, discern, and mind the leadership of Christ within the Church as a key factor of effective Christian leadership. Paul received his undergraduate degree from Malone College, his seminary degree from the Earlham School of Religion, and his doctorate from the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Understanding Individual Discernment-Bruce Bishop
Bruce serves as Communications and Discernment Coordinator for Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends, Bruce has completed a spiritual direction program at San Francisco Theological Seminary and is currently working on a Masters of Theology at George Fox Evangelical Seminary. Bruce, a Recorded Minister, has traveled the U.S. extensively, teaching among Friends of all ages about personal and corporate discernment. He has held several positions in Northwest Yearly Meeting-Youth Superintendent for 12 years, Field Secretary for Leadership Development and interim Associate Superintendent. He has adapted spiritual direction techniques to group clerking and individual listening. Bruce has been part of the collaborative team doing Discernment Workshops in the Northwest and co-authored Practicing Discernment Together, Finding God's Way Forward in Decision Making.


Leadership Group Discernment-Chuck Conniry
Chuck serves as Professor of Pastoral Studies and Vice President and Dean of George Fox Evangelical Seminary, Portland, Oregon. He received his undergraduate degree at American Christian School of Religion; his Masters of Divinity at Bethel Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is the author of Soaring in the Spirit, Rediscovering Mystery in the Christian Life.

Conflict resolution-Lon Fendall
Lon has just retired as former Director of the Center for Peace and Justice and the Center for Global Studies at George Fox University. He is also a GOOD NEWS Associates and Presiding Clerk of Northwest Yearly Meeting. His professional experience includes 10 years of being on the staff of Senator Mark Hatfield and 12 years experience as an academic administrator. He has been active in teaching discernment in Burundi, Rwanda, Congo and the United States. He has authored several books pertinent to discernment: Practicing Discernment Together: Finding God's Way Forward in Decision Making; Citizenship: A Christian Calling; To Live Free: William Wilberforce, Experiencing the Man, the Mission, and the Legacy; At Home With the Poor: Christian Community Development in Haiti; Unlocking Horns: Forgiveness and Reconciliation in Burundi; Seeking Peace in Africa: Stories from African Peacemakers. Lon received his undergraduate degree at George Fox College. He received his Ph.D. in U.S History from the University of Oregon.


Getting from Here to There-Chuck Orwiler
Chuck serves on pastoral staff First Friends Church, Denver, Colorado and as Presiding Clerk of Rocky Mountain Yearly Meeting. When he received his spiritual director's training from Vincentian Center for Spirituality and Work, he began to rethink his pastoral responsibilities in light of discerning the leadership of Christ. That led him to choose A Discernment-Based Model of Church Decision-Making as his Doctoral of Ministry project at George Fox Evangelical Seminary. He has also been a participant in the Congregational Discernment Project with Paul Anderson.


Group Discernment in Youth Ministries-Josh Reid
Josh serves as a Bible teacher at Westside Christian High School in Portland, Oregon. He has been active in youth ministry in Northwest Yearly Meeting and Newberg Friends Church. He and his family love the hiking trails of Oregon, spending weekends at the beach, reading, and playing Settlers of Catan. He carries a constant burden for the victims of human trafficking and those who are most vulnerable to exploitation and want to be part of the new abolitionists of the 21st century.


Group Discernment in the Life of the Denomination-Colin Saxton
Colin serves the Superintendent of Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends. He has spent 16 year in pastoral ministry and 7 years as an adjunct instructor at George Fox University. He has served on the boards of several non-profits including Right Sharing of World Resources, George Fox University, the Center for Peace Learning, Love INC., Yamhill County Christian Peacemakers, Peace and Social Concerns (NWYM), and Friendsview Retirement Community. Colin has had the privilege of traveling among Friends throughout the US and across the globe. He received his undergraduate degree in psychology, a Master's degree in theology/church history, and a Doctoral degree in leadership/spiritual formation.


Clearness Committees and Listening Meetings-Carole Spencer and Bruce Bishop
Carole, a Recorded Friends Minister, serves as the Director of the Friends Center at George Fox Evangelical Seminary, where she teaches Church History and Spiritual Formation. In her pre-academic life she and her husband built a log cabin in the woods of New Brunswick, Canada and raised four sons. In addition to her passion for teaching about the Christian mystics, and Quaker history and spirituality, she loves listening to rock and roll music, playing tennis, skiing, and roaming the beaches and the mountains of the Great Pacific Northwest.


Group Discernment in the Life of the Local Church-Lorraine Watson
Lorraine, a Recorded Friends Minister, serves as pastor of North Seattle Friends Church, Seattle, Washington. After 20 years working as a medical technologist, Lorraine earned a Masters Degree from Western Evangelical Seminary in Portland, OR and discovered that she is called to pastoral ministry. She has pastored at churches in Vancouver, Spokane, and Seattle, WA. Lorraine is the assistant clerk of Northwest Yearly Meeting and a board member of Good News Associates. Her undergraduate degree is from George Fox College.

Jan, a Recorded Friends Minister, serves as the Executive Director of GOOD NEWS Associate in Seattle, Washington. Her professional experiences include pastoring, serving as a campus minister, college religion professor and academic administrator. She is a spiritual director, organizational consultant, a national speaker and workshop leader. Among her publications are Christians at Work: Not Business as Usual and Practicing Discernment Together: Finding God's Way Forward in Decision Making. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and her graduate degree from Seattle Pacific University in Christian Ministries.
