I WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND
Why can't I tell you what's on my mind? Why are my words so hard to find?
I've never been so close, yet so far away, I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
You have given me sunshine every day, I want to do the same for you.
I want to do the same for you.

I've been searching most my life for a friend like the one I've found in you
And if you ever need me too just let me know, please don't you leave yourself all alone
Cause I'll be there for you whenever you call, I want to be your friend
I want to be your friend

BLACK ROSE
That old black rose keeps growing, can you see it showing
Bitter feelings flowing out of this old heart of mine
Thorns keep cutting deeper, resentment is my keeper
My pride has proved a sleeper and love just can't be found

Well I woke up in the morning getting ready for the day
But before I made it out the door I found to my dismay
That a fragrance I knew all too well enticed me once again
The bitter seeds of yesterday go on without an end

Hate just breeds more hatefulness, the circle is complete
And though I try to break away I'm swimming in defeat
All my best laid plans for battle, they can't renew my mind
And as I retreat from the war it starts up one more time
One more time.

HERE AND NOW
It's been so long since I've been free to sing what's in my heart
That I'd begun to wonder if I could even start
But you've awoken something that runs deep within my soul
And it's the sweetest music that I could hope to know

Here and now you've given me the greatest gift around
And I will always cherish the gift of you I've found

The cost of daily living is much more than I can bear
When all it does is blind me to what I know is there
But you have called me back into the vision of my dreams
And helped me to remember the truth of what's unseen

The fire of the sunrise, the silence of the night
The laughter of the evening and the waterfalls delight
The music of creation, the endlessness to see
These are the cords that have joined you and me
You and me

I know that life goes on and we'll all journey on our way
And where our travels take us, it's hard for us to say
But now matter where they go or where they take me to
I know that here inside my heart I'll always be with you

SUGAR
When I was a little boy I'd go to the store
and pick out some cold cereal, two or three or more
I liked the sugar coated ones with prizes free inside
I liked it when the box was bright and the color caught my eye.
I didn't stop to see what the label said, I ate it everyday,
I never looked ahead, I did not even know if it was corn or wheat,
if it was rice or oats, just make it sweet

Give me sugar, give me sugar, bright and shiny sweet, give me sugar

I saw this lovely lady, her hair was long and brown,
she smiled as she told me "I like having you around."
Her eyes were just like fire and how I loved the heat,
her voice was just like honey, so smooth and tasty sweet.
I didn't stop to see what the label said, I saw her every day,
I never looked ahead, I did not even know if she was corn or wheat,
if she was rice or oats, man that girl was sweet

Too much sugar now, too much sugar now,
too much bright and shiny sweet, yeah too much sugar

The other day I found myself back inside that store
looking at those boxes just like I did before
But now I know the sugar ones don't give me what I need
all those bright and shiny boxes on the outside just deceive.
So I stopped to see what the label said
and on every box this is what I read
It's all just corn and oats and rice and wheat,
it can be bright or dull or sugar sweet.

But keep that sugar now, keep that sugar now,
keep that bright and shiny sweet, yeah keep that sugar now

YOURS
Someone might have said this better than I will,
Maybe there's a million poems that say it better still
Or written in some music in such a certain way
That all the sounds and words become the things they're trying to say

And now I want to tell you in a way that you will know
The words that I am singing come directly from my soul
So here's the best that I can do, I wrote this down for you
With the hope if something's missing you can still believe it's true

I love you, I love you, yes I do, and my heart is reaching for the heart of you
Open up the door and you will see this is me, and all that is within me,
and all I am and can be is yours

GUILTY
I've done so many things that I could never tell you of
'cause it would change the way that I look in your eyes.
The reflection that I'm seeing there is surely not the same
as the one I know my mirror won't disguise
Do you see the innocence I'm trying to portray?
There's no consolation in that lie
For the mirror in your eyes and the one upon my wall
tell a truth that I can no longer deny

I am guilty. And I know that it's true but what can I do?
I am guilty. And I chase it away but it comes back to stay and stay,
I am guilty. I know I'm guilty, Yes I'm guilty. I know I'm guilty

They keep trying to tell me that it's just a state of mind
but I believe that it's more like my state of heart,
for I try to fight it with my will believing that it's not there
but inside my soul it keeps tearing me apart
Please don't tell me that I'm simply living out some lie
that was given to me as a child
There's a law within this world, I can see it in life,
I will no longer play a game with its denial

I NEED TO KNOW
Lord, I need to know your love, whisper it into my life until it's into my heart
Lord, I need to know your grace that reaches all of my shame and makes me clean as the snow

For you alone are the worthy one and you know all of my longings
Your love for me is a mighty river that reaches into my soul

Lord, I need to know your joy and find my rest in your peace where I am safe in your arms

For I am blind and I need your vision, and I have come for your healing
It's in my brokenness you receive me, my pain is known in your scars

Lord, I need to know your love, I need to know your grace
I need to know your joy, I need to know you oh Lord
I need to know you my Lord

KINDRED SPIRIT
There's no words that can speak what's in my heart for no language was meant to hold these
things that are known only by the deep within and are felt by the soul that understands

Yet I find I am trying once again to relate what is crying out to share
In the music that echoes out of me comes a song that is longing to be heard

All the life that I've found here, kindred spirit draw me near
To the shelter of your wings and the healing touch unseen

Well it's more then the misty morning dawn or the sun in a watercolor sky
That reflects on the crystals of the sea and it carries me to a memory

Of a child that is still a part of me who remembers when summer's had no end
And the world was a magic mystery full of dreams that a child's eyes can see

All those dreams I'm finding here, kindred spirit draw me near
To the shelter of your wings and the healing touch unseen

In the beauty and aching that I feel is a marriage that silence understands
And the silence is heard beyond a song but the song is a melody we share

All the life that I've found here, kindred spirit drawing near
To the river deep and strong where my heart has found its home

BREATHE
She breathes but not too deeply, in anticipation for nothing she can see
Sighs and wonders of passion colored dreams, lingering somewhere like a distant memory
She breathes

With fear just like a razor, razor sharp, silently guarding the truth that locks the door
Toasting his capture he raises bitter wine, but nobody's listening, in solitude he dines
With fear

THE GREATEST FRIEND
You've been the greatest of friends through thick and through thin
and I'd just like to take a moment or two,
To let you know what I'm thinking and just how I'm feeling
'bout a friend as wonderful as you
You see it's not very often that one takes the time
to tell a person how they really feel
And so before time goes by I want to tell you
just why you are the greatest friend that I could have
You are the greatest friend that I could have

When I was down and was out you chased away all my doubts
with just a smile and your gentle way
You've got that sunny and bright effervescent style that brightens up everybody's day
You are the cream of the crop you are the cherry on top,
you are the teddy bear that's always there,
you are the sunniest ray now what more can I say,
you are the greatest friend that I could have,
you are the greatest friend that I could have

AUTOMOBILEMANIA
Crazy automobilemania, and it's rattlin' my body and my brains
Crazy automobilemania, and I know that it's driving us all quite insane

We paint these little lines along the highway, and string a bunch of lights up in the air
Then we put all kinds of signs around to guide us, and bet our lives that we all see them there
We pave a billion miles of concrete roadway, and dress them up and give them special names
Then we cruise along at speeds we know can kill us, and when we don't die we get beaten, thrashed and maimed

Take it to the shop 'cause it sounds funny, a tune-up ought to do, what is the cost?
The phone rings and it's your local mechanic, that second mortgage might cover your loss
Think I'll buy a cliff and run a special, leave your phone and keys up on the dash
Give me ten and you can push it over, it's guaranteed to cut your stress in half

Well the next time you are driving down the roadway, take a look ahead and look behind
Tell me do you know who are those drivers and what is the condition of their minds?

GARETT'S SONG
Who's that little boy that's looking at me? Whose little tongue is sticking out my way?
Who's looking 'bout to cry, but he can't tell me why,
I'd sure like to know what's on his mind

Maybe he's just thinking 'bout tomorrow when he and I will run and jump and play
Or maybe I should check and see if he is wet, well I do believe I need to change this child!

I see that you are growing so quickly my son and everyday you're learning something new
Your hair and teeth are coming in while mine are falling out
and soon you may be bigger than your dad

So that is why I'll treasure all these moments when rattles are the buzzword for the day
And when I hold you high you drool in my eye but I can see a smile upon your face
Here's another burp cloth for the laundry, where's the camera when you want it now?
The pacifier's there - I put it down somewhere - his thumb is looking for his mouth again

Oh I know you are growing so quickly my son and everyday you're learning something new
Well your mommy and your daddy really love their little boy
so as you're growing you can take your time,
we sure won't mind

AUBREY JOY
Look out world 'cause here she comes, she'll take this place by storm
She's four foot two with eyes of blue, she's been my girl since she was born
When she looks at me well I've gotta smile, when she starts to talkin' might be awhile
That's okay 'cause it's just her style, she's my little Aubrey Joy, my little darlin',
She's my little Aubrey Joy

Blueberry honey bran muffins ain't got nothing on this girl,
she's twice as nice and even more she's my priceless pearl
With a sweet tooth that's ready to take a bite of ice cream and cookies any day or night
Little bit of chocolate makes a lot all right, she's my little Aubrey Joy

Aubrey Joy, I see you're growing up so fast, and you won't always be a little girl
So take my hand and walk with me for just a while let me tell you all that's on my mind
No matter where you go, no matter what you do, just one thing you've got to know I will always love you so

She loves to dance, she loves to draw, she loves to sing a song
And when it comes to make believe she loves to play along
She can melt your heart when she starts to cry but when you hear her laughin' well my oh my
Ain't no mistakin' my honey pie, she's my little Aubrey Joy, my little darlin'
She's my little Aubrey Joy, my little Punky, she's my little Aubrey Joy, my little muffin,
She's my little Aubrey, she's my little Aubrey, she's my little Aubrey Joy

IN YOUR ARMS
Tonight my thoughts are drifting home and I can see the faces of the ones I love
Here inside my heart
I hold them and while I am away I lift them up before the one who keeps their life
And this is what I pray

Surround them in your peace, draw them to your side, catch them when they fall
Keep them in your heart, fill them with your love, hold them in your arms tonight

And when the night is dark and cold and rain is falling in your dreams
And wakes you to the howling of the wind
I reach out across the miles ahead with words that long to wrap you in the quietness
Of slumber once again

And far beyond the hours of this night, for all the days and nights ahead
Let this prayer remain inside my heart and your love always lead them home
